From the Farm

The first step to producing quality pecans is cultivating high-quality pecan trees in the orchards. Pecan farming requires year-round dedication and involves practices such as pruning, irrigation, fertilization, and pest control. Much of the labour in these orchards is still carried out by hand.

Pruning entails selectively trimming parts of the tree to manage its growth and improve nut production. This helps ensure consistent nut quality throughout the orchard, simplifies other farming tasks, and minimizes expenses. Typically, pruning is performed during the dormant season between late autumn and early spring. Irrigation is crucial during the growing season to maintain adequate moisture levels in the soil. Some orchards benefit from the application of nitrogen and zinc-based fertilizers to enhance tree growth and nut yield. Fertilization is commonly conducted throughout the growing season, particularly in the late summer months.
